As the opening drumwork happens we see gears turning to the beat. Then,
at the first chord the shot turns to a television set on the factory
floor, among the gears. It shows static, but suddenly Billy comes
through and begins singing.
[Sweet Seventeen / Sour 29] Instead of the factory floor we are now in a
living room, the tv still shows Billy, but now two teenagers (a boy and
a girl) stand in front of it embracing in slow-motion. The tv then
switches to show the two of them, ten or so years older on opposite
sides of a Judge Judy type show.
[And if you're still feeling down] Split screen One shows The TV W/Billy
sits in the bedroom of the ten-years older girl, who sits on her bed,
crying. The other shows the guy in a diner, the tv on a stand hanging
from the ceiling. He looks like he's about ready to cry.
[I had no shame] Back to the factory floor.
[One more song] New scene. Tv w/Billy at a wedding reception. The tv
then switches to see the married couple somewhere down the line,
fighting it out. The man takes off his ring and throws it away. The
woman storms out the door. [And if you're still feeling down] Split
screen. One side shows The tv, w/Billy is in a store window, along with
a bunch of others. The woman walks by the store, distant and empty
looking. The other side shows the man watching tv in the dark, with the
same expression.
[I had no pulse] Back to the factory. Sparks fly around the tv.
[And if you're still feeling down] Split screen four ways. The two women
and the two men in various everyday places, all lonely looking, or sad
looking.
[Vocals cut off] Back to the factory floor as all the gears come
crashing down onto the tv and fade to black.
Brief interpretation - The factory represents the forces at work in
love, the human spirit, if you will. The two scenes (the reception and
the living room) show the factory at work, but the tv shows how the
world can get in the way (in this case with greed and anger), and the
other scenes, of the lonely people, show the results of that outside,
where the factory crashing down shows how that can destroy the spirit.
