July 20, 2007 - Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium - Santa Cruz, CA, US Concert review by Phoenix In 2000 I was distraught when I found out that my favorite band was to be no more and I never got a chance to see them live. I desperately tried to find tickets, anything just so that I could see them before they were gone. But alas I failed and I missed them. To my joy and relief 7 years later they reformed and I jumped at the chance to see them live. Unable to capture a ticket to the sold out Fillmore concert a coworker told me about the Santa Cruz concert and I was one of the lucky ones that got that golden ticket. This was my first concert and oh boy what a one to go to... It was an intimate affair with only 2,000 of my closest friends showing up (note poetic license with that one). In what looked like a basketball court with bleachers on the sides. My friend and I decided to take a seat and watch the show. I never sat down the entire time. Positioned in the front right of the stage (when looking at it) it was like I was being sung to. No one was even tall enough to block my view. I was mesmerized by songs sung by the band I so loved, New and old ones alike. I just had to remind myself that I was actually in the same room as the Pumpkins! I just couldn’t believe it, but there I was and all I can say is I've never been happier. After 22 songs and about 2 hours and 15 minutes the pumpkins left the stage and after 5 minutes of constant clapping, banging on the floors and chants they reemerged playing another song (Cherub Rock) then leaving. But it was not over because we got them back again playing another song (Death from Above). Then when it looked like they were going to leave again they decided to play anther song. For the first time this entire show they played a song that I could not name because I never heard it before. I now know that it was called Gossamer and has only ever been played on the 2007 tour. This version lasted for half an hour and wow what a ride. It had Jimmy with a great and energetic drum solo that had even Billy bumping his head away at amazement/enjoyment. Then they started to play off each other and man it was magic. At times I really did think that Billy saw me individually... I don't know why but he looked over to me a few times. It helps when you're slightly elevated over everyone else :-) All I can say is Thank you sooo much for the amazing 3 hour concert….. I must see you again!
